Are you doing the same things over and over again, in spite of having promised yourself otherwise? We’ll look at your daily routine and use strategies to “tighten up,” “loosen,” or “adjust” things and activities to your advantage, and “reprogram” ourselves using some inner techniques.
You’re finally willing to talk about your problem with you family or close friends—perhaps difficult, because they either already know about your problem or have stopped trusting you. How do you go about reaching out? Among other things, we’ll discuss strategy and role-play how it’s likely to go.
If it really bothers you that you keep using your substance, or indulging your problem behaviors; or, if you have some clean time but are really worried about situations you won’t be able to avoid, then we can look at those specifics and come up with some go-to coping mechanisms for you to utilize.
Group support is important for most peoples’ recovery. If you are wary of meetings, then we can talk about their different philosophies, common objections people have, and even strategize how to deal with people you might not like when you attend.
Although most traditionally connected with alcoholism, the idea of having a sponsor—a better-recovered peer who functions as an elder friend, and who values a relationship with you—obviously applies to any form of addiction. We’ll talk about the difficulties you may be facing in finding the best match for you.
Perhaps you own issues with addiction treatment involve psychological issues such as peoples’ gullibility, and/or the nature of religion and the harm it may have done. We can talk about this and come up with a philosophical position that you feel comfortable with.
If your life is stable enough to devote time to specific practices, I’ll instruct you in both of these, and we’ll determine if they are working for you. If not, the method can be “tweaked” or adjusted to fit your particular capacity and disposition.
The support of a loved one can make all the diffrence in recovery, or in preventing an abuse pattern from evolving into addiction. We’ll be sure the understanding and communication takes place that’s necessary for the very best support to manifest between you and others who want to help.
So, you have few weeks or months of “clean time” so far, and you’re managing to put one foot in front of the other—but that’s about it. Where is the happiness you’re after? Let me help you come to terms with this new phase of your recovery, and develop activities which you find wholesome and fulfilling.
If available, perhaps the most cost-effective (although time-consuming) way for clients to make progress in their recovery is with a group of like-minded recoverees on the same journey. A well facilitated group provides support and camaraderie and a “reality check” as clients gain insight into their problems.
